WHAT IS RN PSYCHOTHERAPY?
As per the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Registered Nurses are able to complete the controlled act of psychotherapy as long as they feel they have the knowledge/judgement/skill to do so. There are 5 Colleges in Ontario who are recognized to be able to perform psychotherapy, including the CNO.
The Canadian Nurses Association defines nursing as “health care professionals who work both autonomously and in collaboration with others to enable individuals, families, groups, communities and populations to achieve their optimal levels of health. RN’s deliver direct health care services to those at all stages of life and in situations of health, illness, injury and disability; they also coordinate care and support clients in managing their own health. RN’s contribute to the health care system through their leadership across a wide range of settings” (CNA, 2015, framework pdf).

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE A RN PSYCHOTHERAPIST?
Why me?
As a RN, I have been trained to provide safe and efficient patient-centred care. I have been taught how to establish therapeutic relationships with clients as well as how to problem-solve effectively. I have a thorough understanding of how our thoughts, behaviours, and actions are all intertwined through the human body’s systems. I also have knowledge of health-care system navigation - for example, if a patient needs to be seen by a doctor, how to be seen, resources in the area, and medication knowledge.
